  • What Are You Doing?

Picture of one cat looking quizically at another The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing. – Albert Einstein

Action may not always bring happiness, but there is no happiness without action. – Benjamin Disraeli

Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little. – Edmund Burke

Twitter poses the question “What are you doing?” in order to get people started with active posting on the micro-blogging service. Many people answer that question with the mundane. You know, things like “Making breakfast” or “Playing with the cat.” Things that really don’t matter. Others answer with interesting posts, links to things they are reading, or questions that start conversations. Either way, the question itself has a troubling aspect to me.

You see, this stupid question keeps on reminding me that I need to take action in my life. It keeps haunting me with the fact that nothing ever gets done unless I get up off my rusty dusty and move in the direction I say I want to go.

I want to be a writer, that means I gotta punch the keys. I want to move back to the Southwest desert country, that means I have to save my pennies. I want to build an online income stream, that means I have to learn about affiliate programs and actually participate in them. Or build a product and sell it. Sheesh! Wouldn’t things be a lot easier if simple wishing made them so?

Ok. Let’s not even make it “simple” wishing. Let’s make it the stand on one leg, hold your mouth just right, clap your hands and speak reality into the universe kind of wishing promoted in most “Law of Attraction” books flooding bookstore shelves now days.

    Bullshit!

    Not gonna happen.

Not EVER gonna happen, until I get up off my lead-weighted rear and take some kind of ACTION.

If it is to be, then it’s up to me. Crap. I’d much rather it were “If it is to be then let’s pass a law taking it from someone else and giving it to me.”

Except not really. Not really at all.

In spite of the troublesomeness of the question in the title, there is also another reminder that accompanies it. That reminder is once I’ve taken the action and accomplished the desired end, I get to enjoy the fact that I actually earned the reward. At the very least I can legitimately say I took my best shot.

This is the reward of the producer. The sense of satisfaction of a job well done. The mooch, the leech, the thief, the “wisher” can never taste the sweetness of producing his wealth legitimately. A sweetness that can in no way be described, only experienced.

Do you have a dream? Is there a desire that rumbles in the depth of your soul that only you know? What are you doing?
